The barrel at the receiver is marked with a boxed “18”, a “94” in circle and “X” (The “X” is a date code for 1990). The left side of the receiver is marked “E086979”. Barrel Length: The octagon barrel is 22” in length. Sights / Optics: The front sight is blued steel bead dovetailed into the top of the barrel.
The rear sight is “U” notched elevator sight dovetailed into the top of the barrel. Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece smooth walnut with a satin finish. The buttstock has a straight grip with a serrated black plastic buttplate. The buttstock shows a few light marks on its sides and two sharp dings in its belly. There is a 1 ¾” long hairline crack at the toe of the stock on the right side.

The forend shows a few dings in its underside. The LOP measures 13 ¼” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows only extremely light scuff marks at the heel, but the tip of the toe is broken off. The buttplate is in about Poor to Fair condition. The stock rates in about Fair to Good overall condition. Type of Finish: The barrel is blued. The receiver and lever are case colored.
Finish Originality: All Original Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its metal finish. There are a few tiny light handling marks in the barrel and receiver with two small dings on the right side of the receiver at the lever pivot. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good to Fine condition, and would be Excellent except for the stock and buttplate. Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half cock safety position.
We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards. It shares the same “Crackshot” nickname as the Stevens’ Side Lever Crackshot, made at the turn of the 20th Century, and the No.
26 Crackshot, made from 1913 until WWII, both of which were designated as Boy’s Rifles because their light weight and simplicity. This rifle is of more modern design, but at only 4 lbs. In weight, it is was obviously designed for the same marketplace. There is no safer firearm than a single shot rifle when it comes to teaching someone to shoot. That you can use.22 Shorts in it means it is can to be a lot quieter to shoot, which is great for those who live on small farms and don’t want to annoy their neighbors when their son or daughter is out practicing for the spring rabbit season. The toe of the buttplate is broken off and there is a hairline crack at the toe, but it is barely noticeable, and if the buttplate were replaced, this rifle is still in nice enough of a condition to be given as a gift.
When we last we looked, aftermarket replacement buttplates for the Savage M72 were available on-line for about $15. Savage centerfire rifles with serial number beginning w/'F761.' Were produced starting around the end of 1998. I have records of a 516BSAK Savage Striker pistol with serial number starting w/ 'F7616.'
Dated as received on 12/28/98 and Savage 11G, serial number starting w/ 'F7606.' As being recei ved earlier in December 1998.
These firearms came directly from the factory (we are a sales Rep. Agency for Savage). Current Savage centerfire firearms are using serial numbers beginning w/ 'G7.'
